Howdy.
I’m in Iceland right now, as I’ve been since Sunday morning via the redeye. We’re leaving the hotel tomorrow at 4am to get on a flight back stateside.
It’s been a jam packed trip, and it’s causing a departure from our scheduled programming. I have good news and bad news. I’m a bad news first kinda guy, so: writing time has been highly limited. Our schedule has been jam-packed, and trying to brave the motion sickness by writing in the car went even worse than I expected. Hence the italics: I’m not putting out any serious writing this week.
The good news is actually two-fold (goodie!). First: I’ve run into a couple stories. I don’t want to spoil anything — you’ll hear more about that in the coming however-long. But, to dramatically understate things, I’m pretty damn excited about this.
Second: what I’m lacking in writing, I have many, many times over in photography. I brought my camera on a trip for the first time in a bit, and I’m unbelievably glad I did — this is a beautiful, beautiful country. As you can imagine, my trigger finger turned ITCHY, and I’ve got two SD cards full of photos. I’m very much an amateur, so results very much varied, but I’m pretty happy with the results — and some of these shots are damn hard to screw up.
So this week’s edition is going to be mostly photography. I’ll give some context and tell a couple stories, but I’m going to let the photography carry the piece this week. Maybe. I tend to run my mouth, so plenty of text will likely find its way in. I guess we’ll just see how things end up. But I think it’s going to be a fun time.
About that: I leave for the airport in eight hours, and the sun literally has not set here once this week (!!!), and I still have to track down some food and get packed up and consider getting some sleep. If I tried to sift through both SD cards and put this whole thing together tonight, two things would happen: I would have an aneurysm, and it would suck.
So here’s the plan. I'm leaving a few photos here as a teaser for what’s to come. Once I’m back, I’ll work on putting together this photo-essay (is that what they’re called? What actually IS a photo essay?), and I’ll see how much progress I make in the near term. I’m also going to start on one of those writing projects I teased earlier on. From there, one of three things will happen (listed here in increasing degrees of likelihood):
You’ll get an off-cycle ITW with all the photography sometime next week, and this awesome story will fall perfectly written from the heavens and arrive in your inbox a week from today (unlikely)
That photography edition will still land off-cycle next week, I’ll have something new next week, and you’ll see that project I’m excited about the week after (entirely possible)
I’ll bump that photography edition to next week on Friday, make sure it’s in good shape, and the project I’m teasing will show up… sort of whenever it’s done? with regular programming in between if necessary (I’d put my money here)
As a side note: how do people feel about Fridays? I like the idea of publishing on the same day each week; it feels professional and reliable. Friday became the official publishing date after I got tired of scrambling to finish things for Thursday — point being, chosen mostly at random. Should we keep Friday? Would you prefer Saturday? Do you not care, and should I just fire it off sometime during the weekend, whenever my grubby little hands decide to hit the send button? Here’s a poll!
In any event, I promised teaser photos, and I’m almost done rambling so you can see them. You can expect to see things … when you see them. In the meantime, take care — I’m really excited to share what’s coming with you all.
Without further ado:
